Scoliosis Training

Everyone wants to be able to exercise, but for those with scoliosis it can be different. It can be difficult to know what exercise is good and what to consider.
Can you do strength training with Scoliosis?
Strength training is recommended if you have scoliosis. However, it is important to perform the exercises correctly to strengthen the muscles that support the spine. Otherwise, the curves may increase and the scoliosis may worsen.
It is important to find someone who is knowledgeable about scoliosis and who can put together a strength program with individualized exercises. People with scoliosis have an uneven development of the muscles of the back and may find it difficult to make contact and stretch their back, scoliosis can cause back pain in the side of the back, thoracic spine and lumbar spine.
What does it mean to exercise with scoliosis?
Some people think that you cannot exercise or play any sport with scoliosis. This is not true. Understanding and knowing the curves of your spine makes it easier to work consistently and long-term to correct imbalances and control the progression of scoliosis. Studies show that exercise adapted for scoliosis can:
Reducing or eliminating pain
Slowing down and even stopping the progression of scoliosis
Increase mobility and flexibility in the trunk and back.
Increase muscle strength and endurance
Improving lung function and breathing
Reduce instability due to degenerated spine.
One successful training method is the Scrotch method. It involves a specific mix of exercise, stretching and breathing techniques (rotational angle breathing, RAB). The method addresses the curve/or and rotation of the spine. The exercises are adapted to the individual and are based on the pattern of the curve and the type of scoliosis. The exercises mirror the curve of the spine and excessively correct in the opposite direction.
Spiral stabilization (SPS) is a method adapted for idiopathic scoliosis (the origin of scoliosis is then unknown). The method involves training the brain to control the body’s muscles in a specific way. Overworked and tense muscles will then gradually relax and become softer, while weak muscles become stronger and more efficient. As a result, pain is reduced and the body becomes more mobile. This will then make the body more symmetrical in both static and dynamic work.
The Scientific Exercises Approach to Scoliosis (SEAS) is a personalized method. The exercises are adapted to the curves of the spine. As structural scoliosis is chronic, it is important that the exercises can be done independently and that they are similar to movements the person performs in everyday life.
There is also yoga and pilates specifically adapted for people with scoliosis.
Exercise in combination with treatments for best effect
It is important to exercise the muscles in your body when you have scoliosis. Otherwise, there is a risk that the condition will worsen and you may experience more pain and stiffness. Fascia treatment is a good complement to exercise. It gives the body the best chance of improving or correcting the scoliosis. The body is balanced, tension and pain are released and the flow in the fascia increases. This increases the ability to glide between different structures in the body and allows you to move more freely. The treatment is not painful and is often experienced as pleasant and relaxing.
