Whiplash Treatment
Recent research shows that whiplash injury is due to inflammation of the fascia, the connective tissue
The pressure from the injury causes the cobweb-like collagen threads in the neck to stick together, pinching nerve endings and signaling pain.
FasciaClinics offer both immediate help with pain-relieving Fascia treatment and specially trained Fascia therapists who have helped thousands of people overcome problems after whiplash.
Symptoms of Whiplash Injury?
A whiplash injury can trigger pain and other more diffuse symptoms to varying degrees. The symptoms usually appear days after the injury, but they can also linger until long afterwards, when it may be difficult to make the connection between trauma and pain, depending on how severe the trauma was. In addition to stiffness and pain in the neck, there may be dizziness and pain in the head, shoulders, shoulders and arms with numbness and tingling. There may also be back pain, lower back pain, hip pain and leg pain. Swelling at the base of the neck can press on nerves, causing facial nerve damage and also affecting hearing, sight, taste and touch.
What is a Whiplash injury?
Whiplash means that the neck is subjected to a trauma, the neck is stretched at high speed, so that tissues are damaged. When the head moves at high speed in one direction without being able to control and slow down the movement, soft tissues in the neck can be damaged. Typically, this occurs in a car accident when you are hit from behind, but it can also occur in various falls and tackles.
A whiplash injury can result in varying pain from the neck, head, shoulders, but no damage is visible on the skeleton in an X-ray examination.
When a person is subjected to a trauma such that the head is thrown in one direction at high speed and then back again, it means that the neck is subjected to a strong stretch, so that soft tissues are damaged. The head is heavy and the neck muscles are unable to control and slow down the sudden movement and the muscles, ligaments, joint capsules, nerves, etc. are damaged not only in the neck but along the entire spine. The injury leads to inflammation and swelling of the fascia, which increases pressure on pain receptors, which are abundant in the fascia. The pain receptors eventually become overexerted and more pain receptors are formed and the pain increases. Pressure on nerves can also cause other symptoms such as loss of sensation and numbness.
When and where should I seek treatment for Whiplash?
If you have suffered a whiplash injury, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible to assess the injury and to link the injury to the trauma. Often a standard X-ray is done to rule out damage to the skeleton and sometimes an MRI is also done where soft tissue is visible. Often, however, no visible changes are found with either plain X-ray or MRI, even though the pain may be severe. Damage to the fascia, which is found inside and around all structures in the body, is not visible with these examination methods.
How is whiplash treated?
Treatment at a fascia clinic for whiplash aims to provide relief for the neck and cervical vertebrae, provide security and get the flow going in the fascia. Improving flow reduces pressure on nerves, blood vessels and lymphatic vessels, and improves nutrition and tissue balance in general. The body is also balanced so that the pelvis, vertebrae and cervical vertebrae are in balance and pressure is evenly distributed. The treatment is pleasant and relaxing, allowing the body to heal itself.
Whiplash exercises – What can I do myself?
First, the body needs time to recover and rest. Relaxation exercises with deep breathing through the nose, several times a day are always good. Take deep breaths to fill the abdomen and push the diaphragm down towards the pelvis, this activates the vagus nerve and thus the autonomic nervous system to calm and relax. Stillness without movement does not promote healing, but flow and circulation must be kept going. Go for a walk in a relaxing environment, in the woods and in nature, but do not overexert your body. Depending on the degree of injury, different yoga exercises can be performed, activate the body but try to avoid pain.
