What is Migraine?
Migraine is a type of intense, bursting headache that comes in attacks. The attacks can be very frequent, several per week or rarely once a year, and an attack lasts for one to three days. The pain worsens with exertion and you usually feel nauseous and vomit. It becomes difficult to cope with work during an attack and you are usually passed out in a dark room.
There are two types of migraine, with or without aura. With aura is more unusual and starts with a sensation of visual changes, double vision, visual field disturbances, etc. Numbness in the face and tongue may also occur. The aura lasts for 10-30 minutes before the headache comes. Migraine without aura is the usual migraine when the headache comes immediately.
You can also have chronic migraine and it is considered chronic if you have migraines more than 15 days per month for more than three months.
What symptoms do migraines cause?
It is an intense pulsating pain similar to a headache but can be unbearable and it worsens with exertion. The pain is often very intense, but can be more moderate, and migraines usually cause nausea and vomiting, as well as extreme sensitivity to light and sometimes sound. The pain usually comes from one side of the head or in the form of a headache behind one eye, but it can also be bilateral. Migraines come in attacks that can be frequent, several times a month, or less frequent. After a migraine attack, when the headache has gone, you are often very tired.
You can also suffer from so-called ocular migraine, which means that you do not get a headache but instead only get spots on your vision, which can create problems in everyday activities such as driving. The most common is that you first get spots on your vision and then get a headache, this is called migraine with aura and not eye migraine.
What causes migraines?
The physiological cause of migraine is unclear. A migraine attack is often triggered by stress, physical or mental tension, too little REM sleep, but can also occur as a result of certain foods. For example, it is common to be triggered by red wine, cheese or chocolate, but this is individual. Often, the attack comes after a stressful period, when you relax, for example Saturday morning if it is the first day off after a stressful week. A likely cause is that the composition and flow in the fascia is affected by stress, hormones, etc., which in turn results in nerve damage.
Migraines can affect all ages, including children, but are more common in women and there appears to be a hormonal influence. Attacks often decrease in frequency or disappear completely after menopause.
There is some genetic background. There are theories that the brainstem and trigeminal nerve are involved.
Why do I have migraines?
Think about the situation in which the migraine attacks occur. Have you been under extra stress, eaten something special, slept too little, etc. Keep a diary of things that happened in the days before the attack. This can be useful to have when you talk to your doctor.
When and where should I seek treatment for migraine?
It is important to seek medical help if you have recurrent severe headaches. Having a record of how and when the pain occurs, what it feels like, etc. will help the doctor make a diagnosis. Why are you worried? Make sure you sleep and have a good eating routine. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, don’t eat or drink what you know triggers seizures. Relax regularly with a walk in nature, do relaxation exercises and practice deep breathing slowly through your nose. Make sure you find time to do what you enjoy, preferably every day.
Exercises for migraine?
Pause with light gymnastics such as stretching your arms upwards and getting as tall as possible, palms facing the ceiling, standing in the stretch for about 30 seconds. Bend down and “pick berries” to the left and right for 30 seconds. Repeat a few times.
Take a walk, preferably in the countryside, look at the nature around you and try to concentrate on a beautiful flower or tree, listen to the birds.
Do relaxation exercises and practice deep breathing slowly through your nose. Lie down and put your legs up on a stool, 90° angle at the knee and hip, stretch your arms out to the sides with your palms facing the ceiling. Breathe deeply through the nose and hold for 10 minutes.
